Mining
Open-pit mining will occur in three separate areas all within 7 kilometres of the processing plant and camp. Water retention dykes are being constructed to allow for mining beneath shallow lakes. The mines will use conventional drill, blast, truck and shovel methods year-round. Waste will be used for construction, or dumped in waste storage sites or previously mined-out areas.
Initial mining is concentrated in the North Portage pit area. The Portage pit is expected to be in production from late 2009 to 2014. The Goose Island pit is expected to start producing ore in 2013, following construction of dykes in 2010 and 2011. Further in the future, dewatering of Vault Lake will allow the Vault pit to be mined.
Processing
The 8,500-tonne-per-day conventional gold processing plant consists of crushing, grinding, gravity concentration, thickening, cyanide leaching, and gold recovery in a carbon-in-pulp circuit, followed by smelting to form gold doré bars. It is designed to operate 365 days a year.
